Chapter One | The Malfoy Manor
"You give me light when I find myself in the darkest times."
Draco sat uncomfortably in his chair while he watched his father scolded their latest house elf. His father spat cruel words at him. The elf cowered behind his filthy hands while his father looked at him in disgust. The day was still far from over and according to his father the elf had already failed to please him. Draco could see his father reaching in his robes for his wand. He felt the smallest bit of pain for the creature. The elf was thrown against the wall under Lucius Malfoy’s jinx. The elf started to tremble and shortly after he started to wail and plead to be forgiven.
"Disgusting," Lucius said raising his wand again. Draco watched the helpless elf and drew his own wand, holding it close to his thigh. He looked at his dad and pointed it at him.
Expelliarmus. Draco thought to himself concentrating hard while he flicked his wand in his father’s direction. His wand was sent into the air. Draco quickly hid his wand in his lap. He fixed his eyes on the blank parchment in front of him. He grasped on his quill and avoided reaching his father’s eyes.
"Draco," His father said, "Go on and tell me how I was suddenly disarmed. I’m sure I will be humored,"
"I didn’t do it. I’ve been writing a letter to my friends," Draco said secretively placing his wand into his pocket.
"Are you saying I am to believe that my wand shot out of my hand for absolutely no reason?"
"No…" Draco began to say while he stood up from his seat.
"Do not lie to me," Lucius growled backing Draco into the wall while he held his wand to his neck, "Now tell me Draco, why?"
"Lucius!" Narcissa said pulling down her husbands arm, "How dare you point your wand at anyone in this home. Now Draco, continue to write to your little friends somewhere but here, I beg!”
Draco pressed his lips together and glared at his father and proceeded to push him out of his way. He scowled at his mother one last time before taking quick steps up the beautiful spiraling staircase. He stormed through the hall and found his way to the balcony. He locked himself out and stood in the darkness. He slipped his hand in his pocket to obtain his wand but his hand was punctured by something sharp.
"Lumos!" Draco said shining the light that was beaming from the tip of his wand into his coat pocket. He peered into it but did not see anything. He held the light in closer and saw something glisten deep in the bottom of his pocket. He squinted at it and carefully picked up the delicate object between his thumb and pointer finger. He lifted it out and a chain followed the small object. As he observed it closer in the darkness he notice it was a silver ring strung on a chain. His eyebrows knit as he wondered how it had got in his coat. He fixed his eyes on the ring and slipped it on his finger. Blood flowed to his face and throughout his body as the ring slid perfectly into place. Small scratches appeared on the ring, almost appearing like writing but Draco did not think much of it.
"Nox," Draco said calmly. He sat in the darkness as the snow fell silently in the black sky. He inhaled the cold are and rested his eyes while he shivered in the freezing. He looked back at the days he spent before he came home for the holidays. A smile returned to Draco’s emotionless face for the first time since he was at home.
Draco was sitting in the snow, nearly freezing. His fingers where going numb. He bit his lip and clenched his hands in is pockets looking at the frozen lake. He blinked away tears.
"Draco?" A voice called from the edge of the forest.
"Stay away," Draco called out, lifting his body and talking steps towards the ice.
"Don’t run, please," The boy said again, his voice getting dramatically closer. Draco ignored him and took a careful step onto the ice as the footsteps behind him approached.
"I don’t need your help, Potter," Draco said quietly walking across the frozen lake, his eyes watered and his face stung from the wind.
"I won’t let you leave, I want to make you feel okay," Harry said holding his hand out to Draco. Draco ignored it and turned around.
"Ever since I’ve been seeing you things have gone from bad to worse. It was never a good idea. I want you to be safe always, and you do as well. Can’t you see this is the only way we have got?" Draco said ignoring the tears streaming down his cheeks.
"I’m willing to risk everything for you, Draco," Harry said wiping a tear from Draco’s cheek. Draco looked into Harry’s brilliant green eyes. Before Draco could argue Harry pressed his lips against his.
It felt as if fire was running through Draco’s veins as Harry kissed him. Draco’s skin burned as Harry ran his hands through his strikingly blond hair and down his neck. His hands drifted down his waist and Draco felt Harry place his hands in his coat pocket.
Draco remembered that night as if it had happened just a few hours ago. Every detail. He looked at his coat and realized one thing he had forgotten. He was wearing this that same day. He recalled Harry reaching inside his pocket and pulled the ring out once again. He put it on and watched the scratches appear again. He realized they must be words. He looked closely but couldn’t make out what they said.
"Alohamora," Draco said in a hushed voice, unlocking the door and held the ring under closer light.
"I am always with you," Draco whispered, reading the beautiful cursive etched into the silver ring.
